It’s time for a new spring ambassador. #VotePEEPS!
As many of you can attest to after having spent the weekend hunkered down at home while it snowed for more than 24 hours straight, only to emerge the next day and spend hours digging out your plowed-in cars…winter on the East Coast really stinks. Here in the Philly area, we got—depending on the specific town—over two feet of snow, with my little burg coming in at around 26 inches. 26 inches of snowfall in one storm?!? In a week or so, the groundhog’s gonna have a tough time poking his head up through all that snow to tell us whether we’ll be dealing with more winter or some much-welcomed springtime.
Speaking of that groundhog…he really needs to be dethroned as the ambassador of springtime. Sure, he’s cute and all, but Punxsutawney Phil is perhaps not the most positive sign of spring. He generally looks kinda cranky on Groundhog Day (can’t blame the furry guy; I, too, would hate to be disturbed early in the morning to predict the weather, of all things), his prediction is often wrong (he’s actually only gotten it right 39% of the time), and even when his prediction is right, it usually means we’re getting more winter…and who the heck wants that? It’s time for a new ambassador of spring, and I think you’re gonna love who I have in mind.
It’s no secret that I love PEEPS®. They represent everything I love: sweet treats that are delicious, gluten-free, brightly colored, and so much fun. I’d love to see the PEEPS® Chick be the official ambassador of spring! Instead of being full of grumpiness, doom, and gloom like some furry creature who reluctantly pokes his head out on a chilly winter morning, the PEEPS® Chick is all sunshine and brightness, sweetness and yum. It’s the color of sunshine, daffodils, and a cold glass of lemonade. It brings with it light, optimism, and sugary sweetness. Isn’t that more representative of spring than what the groundhog brings to the table?
Fun facts about the PEEPS® Chick:
- It was born in 1953. Back then, it took 27 minutes to make the Chick! Now, it only takes 6 minutes.
- In the late 1950s, the Chick started showing up in colors besides yellow—for example, lavender, blue, green, pink, and other springtime colors.
- In the 1960s, the Chick expanded its family with other marshmallow friends created in seasonal shapes (I love the PEEPS® bunnies!).
- The yellow PEEPS® Chick is only available for purchase during springtime. Just another reason why the Chick is really the first sign of spring!
As winter draws to a close, keep an eye out for colorful PEEPS® Chicks for sale at your favorite store (a sugary little birdie told me February 15 is the magic date that you may start seeing the Chick and its friends lining the shelves!).
