Deliciously craveable gluten-free snacks

reviewpurposes

I have a confession to make: I’m a snack addict. And being gluten-free has only made me more addicted! That’s because I’m constantly packing snacks in Baggies to take with me everywhere, since I can’t always count on finding delicious gluten-free snacks when I’m out and about. Whether you enjoy your snacks at work, on the couch, on the go, or all of the above, check out this roundup of incredibly craveable gluten-free snacks. From chips to cheese to chocolate, you’ll find something that satisfies all of your cravings here!

Cheesy and Salty

In addition to being a snack addict, I’m also a macaroni and cheese addict. I always eat gluten-free varieties, and sometimes it’s dairy-free too, but either way, mac and cheese is my weakness. I’d eat it every day if I could (and I guess I could, but then I wouldn’t be able to fit in my pants, which would be a problem). Luckily, for the days I don’t have mac and cheese for lunch, dinner, or even breakfast (that’s happened before!), there’s a seriously awesome snack to tide me over: Beanitos Mac N’ Cheese-flavored Baked White Bean Crunch. Made with navy beans and rice, these crunchy little morsels are healthier for you than you’d think: each serving contains 4 grams of protein, they’re baked (not fried), and they’re a good source of fiber, with 3 grams per serving. And did I mention they’re delicious? They’ll satisfy your craving for something crunchy and something super-cheesy. If you don’t have access to a stove or microwave to make mac and cheese, this snack is definitely the next best thing!

I’ve talked before about how Cello Whisps are a great topping for soups and salads (better than croutons, in my opinion). But you know what else they’re good for? Eating as a snack. These round little cheese bites, made of just Parmesan cheese, are incredibly delicious, to the point where they may actually be addictive. One bag contains three servings of these crispy little morsels, but you may want to portion it out into three snack-size Baggies when you first open the bag, otherwise it’s super-tough to stop eating after just one serving. They’re sooooo yummy! In addition to eating them right out of the bag, consider adding them as an ingredient in your favorite savory snack mix recipe.

Picture this: It’s 3 PM, you’re at work, and you want to be healthy, but what you really feel like is devouring as much snack food as you can. What can you reach for that you can eat a lot of without going into unhealthy territory? Popcorn, of course! And Good Health’s Half Naked Popcorn, with a hint of olive oil, is exactly the sort of snack you need. This stuff is light, fluffy, airy, and crunchy all at once. It’s made with ingredients you know and can pronounce, like popcorn (a whole grain!), olive and sunflower oils, and sea salt. A serving size is a whopping 5 cups (that’s big for a snack!), and it’s only 120 calories—plus it packs 3 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber per serving. Should Good Health’s Half Naked Popcorn be your new BFF when those big snack cravings come calling in the afternoon? I definitely think so!

Cheese is great, but cheese with a little spice is even more craveworthy. Enter Gold Emblem Abound’s Jalapeno Cheddar-flavored Quinoa Puffs, which you can find in the snack aisle at your local CVS/Pharmacy. These quinoa puffs are fluffy and flavored oh so deliciously with just the right balance of cheese and jalapeno. In addition to being gluten-free, they’re also cholesterol-free. Next time you’re at CVS/Pharmacy to pick up a prescription, stop by the snack aisle to pick up a bag of these Jalapeno Cheddar-flavored Quinoa Puffs and check out what other gluten-free snacks are available from Gold Emblem Abound (there are quite a few, and every one I’ve tried has been very tasty).

What’s more craveable than a potato chip? It’s a tried-and-true favorite snack to reach for when you’re watching TV after dinner. But if you want to really do potato chips right, choose ones made with healthier fats. Good Health offers several varieties of kettle chips that are downright delicious—some varieties are made with olive oil, and some are made with avocado oil.  For example, their Barbecue flavored Kettle Chips made with Avocado Oil are out of this world (seriously, I had to stop myself from eating half the bag in one sitting). And their Sea Salt Kettle Chips with Avocado Oil are also outstanding. These chips pack healthy fats that help keep you feeling satisfied, and you can feel good about eating them because they contain about 30% less fat than regular potato chips. Plus, these chips don’t contain any hydrogenated oils, artificial colors, added preservatives, and have 0 grams of trans fat. If you want to snack on chips, these are a really good choice, health-wise as well as taste-wise.

And speaking of potato chips… You remember the phrase “once you pop, you can’t stop” from a certain chip brand’s commercials back in the day, right? Well, if you’ve been missing those chips in a can (since many of those flavors are not gluten-free), let me introduce you to a chip in a can that’s definitely gluten-free: Mamee Stacked Potato Crisps. These addictive chips are tough to stop eating—both because they taste good and it’s always fun to eat snack food out of a can! They come in Original, BBQ, and Sour Cream & Onion flavors. All of the flavors are salty and savory, with a satisfying crunch. My advice: count out a serving of chips, set it on a plate or napkin, and then close up the can before you begin eating—this will help you not go overboard as you enjoy this tasty snack!

Sweeter Treats

It’s always a treat when KIND Snacks comes out with a new, delicious product. And their newest creations aren’t the bars you know and love, but bags—of Popped Snack Bites! These sweet snacks come in two flavors, Salted Caramel and Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt, and they’re every bit as crave-worthy as their names imply. These snacks are really interesting because they’re made of popcorn, popped sorghum, and oats, with delicious flavorings. The sweet-and-salty Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt can satisfy sweet and savory cravings, while Salted Caramel is pure sweet goodness. Despite these snacks tasting so decadent, they’re actually pretty good for you; they each contain 6 “super grains” (in addition to oats and sorghum, they also contain millet, quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat) and boast 18-19 grams of whole grains per serving. They’re also low-sodium, vegan, and nut-free. Plus, a serving is only 110 calories. So go ahead and munch away on these tasty Popped Snacks!

It’s pretty uncommon for anyone to think gum is amazing—I mean, it’s just gum, right? But Project 7’s gum actually goes beyond amazing. First of all, the flavors (sooooo many flavors!) are unique and delicious. Whether it’s a single-flavor pack of gum like Red Velvet Cupcake, Rainbow Ice, or Wedding Cake, or a Build-a-Flavor pack like Half & Half (Front Porch Lemonade + Iced Tea) or Key Lime Pie (Key Lime + Cream Pie), these sugar-free gums will make your taste buds happy. And at only 5 calories per serving (a serving is 2 pieces of gum), they’ll make your waistline happy, too. In addition, Project 7 is fantastic because they give back—for example, they’ve planted nearly 4 million trees, provided 1.1 million hours of education, given 100,000 malaria treatments…and that’s just a small sample of what they’ve done to give back to other people and to the planet. Don’t you love it when you purchase something that you can feel really good about buying? That’s how I feel when I pick up Project 7 gum!

It’s time to get nutty (and fruity!) with Royal Hawaiian’s new Fruit and Nut Crunch snacks! These scrumptious bites combine Royal Hawaiian’s macadamia nuts with a variety of nuts, fruits, and flavors. Blueberry Pomegranate Macadamia Crunch is a sweet and tart snack that features blueberries, cranberries, almonds, pomegranate, and brown rice. The Mango Pineapple Macadamia Crunch is deliciously tangy, while Kona Coffee Banana Macadamia Crunch tastes like a yummy banana bread-flavored snack. These bite-sized snacks that come in resealable bags are convenient and portable, but watch out—once you start munching, it may be really hard for you to stop! Luckily, because these little bites are packed with nuts, they’ll be a satisfying and filling snack, though you may be tempted to eat the entire bag just because they taste so good and are fun to eat!

Lundberg Family Farms’ Sweet Dreams Milk Chocolate rice cakes are a surprisingly delicious snack. You might not think to combine rice cakes with milk chocolate, but this snack is proof that when you do put those two ingredients together, it’s a winning combination! For anyone out there who thinks rice cakes are boring, this snack will totally prove you wrong. This rice cake has a mouthwatering layer of chocolate on top—and while that’s an incredibly yummy snack on its own, you don’t have to stop there! Top that chocolate with a thin layer of peanut butter, or a little strawberry jelly or sliced strawberries, and you have an even more scrumptious treat! Plus, these rice cakes are made of whole grains and provide you with 2 grams of fiber (pretty good for a snack food!).

I love CVS/Pharmacy’s line of gluten-free Gold Emblem Abound snacks because I always seem to be hungry at CVS–even if I just came in to pick up one prescription, I generally leave with that one prescription and at least one snack food. I really enjoy Gold Emblem Abound’s Cranberry Almond Rice Pop Clusters. I love the combination of crispy rice, almonds, and cranberries, all shaped into little bite-sized squares. These are one of my favorite snacks to keep stashed in my desk at work, as they’re wonderful at satisfying those 3 PM snack cravings!
