Celebrate Earth Day with gluten-free products that give back
April 22 is Earth Day, a great opportunity for you to think about reducing your carbon footprint. One easy way to give back is by supporting brands that are environmentally friendly, and recycling or composting packaging whenever possible instead of simply throwing it in the garbage. Below, I’ve compiled a few of my favorite brands–each of which makes quite a few gluten-free options–that I feel do a great job giving back to the planet. Keep reading to learn which of their products are the most delicious and how you can enjoy them in environmentally responsible ways!
How they give back: Alter Eco, makers of so many of my favorite gluten-free products (from truffles to quinoa to chocolate bars), have made sustainability a huge priority. They do their best to make so much of their packaging recyclable and compostable. For example, their Heirloom Quinoa is now packaged in the company’s Gone4Good pouches, which are the first stand-up pouches made from renewable, plant-based, non-GMO materials.
Take action! Buy a pouch of Alter Eco’s Heirloom Quinoa, cook it easily in your rice cooker, and add the empty pouch to your compost pile.
LUNDBERG FAMILY FARMS
How they give back: This maker of rice-based products makes so many gluten-free staples and snacks. This is a brand I rely on frequently for safe-to-eat foods. I love that not only are their vittles good for my tummy, but the brand as a whole is good for the planet. They’re a participant in the Non-GMO Project; a leader in organic farming, energy conservation, and renewable energy; and a member of the Sustainable Food Trade Association (SFTA). Each year they release their SFTA Report to the public; you can view the latest report here.
My favorite gluten-free product: With over 150 products to choose from, how can I pick just one? The organic Sweet Dreams milk chocolate covered rice cakes are decadent and delicious, and the Sea Salt rice chips satisfy my cravings for salty/crunchy snacks.
Take action! Choose one of Lundberg Family Farms’ many easy-to-prepare gluten-free entrees and side dishes. Make it, enjoy it, and recycle the box!
How they give back: You’d think soups that come in a box might leave a lot of waste behind once the soup is all gone. Not so with Imagine Foods’ soups. Theirs come in aseptic carton packages that use fewer materials and less energy than traditional packaging.
My favorite gluten-free product: I’m the kind of girl that can eat soup no matter what month of the year it is. Spring, summer, whatever—the hot weather doesn’t make me change my mind. Luckily, Imagine Foods makes a wide variety of yummy gluten-free soups. I love so many of their creamy soups (bonus: they’re all listed as being gluten-free!), particularly their Creamy Potato Leek Soup and their Creamy Red Bliss Potato and Roasted Garlic Soup.
Take action! Enjoy one of Imagine Foods’ soups, and then recycle the carton when you’re done.
How they give back: You probably already think to recycle plastic bottles, but did you ever consider recycling the packaging for your oral care products like toothpaste tubes and mouthwash bottles? Colgate sets themselves apart by making much of their packaging recyclable.
My favorite gluten-free product: Totally their Optic White toothpaste! (Check out a full review of it here.)
Take action! Purchase your favorite gluten-free Colgate toothpaste. Once you’ve used up the tube, save it to send to TerraCycle, where you can be a part of their free, easy Colgate Oral Care Recycling Program.
How they give back: Whoever says applesauce in a squeezy tube is just for kids is no fun at all. I love GoGo squeeZ’ flavored applesauces, and I enjoy eating them straight from those funky little packages! Not only do I love the many fun flavors GoGo squeeZ offers, I also like that the packaging is recyclable through TerraCycle!
My favorite gluten-free product: I’ve always loved their AppleCherry flavor—super fruity and flavorful!
Take action! Buy a box of their squeezy applesauce, share it with your family, and save the empty packages so you can recycle them through TerraCycle.
How they give back: Did you ever stop to think about how much snack food waste gets thrown out every day? Imagine how much waste could be saved if we were able to recycle the bags from our favorite snack foods. And thanks to Hain Celestial/Sensible Portions, we can!
My favorite gluten-free product: There are so many great gluten-free Hain Celestial products, but two of my favorites are Garden of Eatin’ tortilla chips and Terra chips (made from root vegetables—yum!).
Take action! Buy a bag of Hain Celestial gluten-free snack food, eat and enjoy it, and save the empty packaging to recycle for free with TerraCycle.
How they give back: If you’re eating a gluten-free CLIF Bar, you can feel good about it—you’re giving your body energy, and you have an opportunity to do good by saving the bar’s packaging and recycling it.
My favorite gluten-free product: I love their organic Wild Blueberry Almond flavor! Check out some of their other gluten-free flavors here.
